In numerous surrounding protected areas, notably the brand-new Kurinjimala Sanctuary to the east, the majority of Munnar’s native plants and animals are still alive and well. Several endangered and endemic species, like the Neelakurinji, Grizzled Giant Squirrel, and Nilgiri Thar, are known to exist in these protected areas.
