The Taj Mahal is located around 2.5 kilometers to the northwest of Agra Fort. The fort was the scene of warfare during the Indian uprising of 1857 and served as the royal home of the Mughals for many years. The fort is semicircular in shape, with a chord parallel to the river and walls that rise to a height of 70 feet. Massive circular bastions with battlements, embrasures, and string courses are spaced along double ramparts. On each of its four sides, there are four gates, one of which, the Khizri gate, opens to the river. The public cannot approach the Delhi gate.
A city called Fatehpur Sikri was established close to the much older Sikri. The name Fatehabad, which means “victory” in Persian and has Arabic origins, was given to the city by Akbar; it was eventually renamed Fatehpur Sikri. Few Mughal rulers used the city as their capital. Historians claim that Akbar, the renowned Mughal emperor, had a keen interest in Fatehpur Sikri’s construction and even directed the design of the city. Akbar based the design of the building complex on Persian ideas. Because sandstone is so readily available in the surrounding locations, all of the structures in this area are composed of the red stone. On a flat piece of land, the city’s imperial palace complex is made up of separate pavilions that are placed in formal geometry.
The original site of Lord Krishna’s birth is commemorated by Krishna Janmabhoomi in the Katra Keshav Deo Temple. A tiny room with a raised platform and portraits of Krishna and stories about his birth can be reached from the main temple. According to mythology, Lord Krishna was actually born in the prison cell on the grounds of the temple. The stone-walled jail makes me think of Kansa’s brutality. When the site was being excavated, several statues and sculptures from the past were discovered. Every year on Janmashtami, thousands of worshippers descend upon the gorgeous shrine that was formerly a prison cell.
The main city in Rajasthan, Jaipur, is referred to as the “Pink City” by locals. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the monarch of Amber, who is also the name of the city, built it in 1727. The city’s streets are wide and regular, which sets it apart from other pre-modern Indian cities. Five urban quarters surround the east, south, and west sides of a central palace quarter, and the urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets. The expansive palace complex, the formal gardens, and the little lake are all located inside the Palace quarter. The hill in the northwest corner is crowned with the Nahargarh Fort, which served as the King Sawai Jai Singh II’s palace. The observatory, known as Jantar Mantar, is a renowned tourist destination in Rajasthan and India and is listed among the World Heritage Sites.
