Overview

Cochin

Cochin, commonly known as Kochi, is a significant port city on India’s west coast near the Arabian Sea that is part of the Ernakulam district. Kochi is also known as Ernakulam, which refers to the eastern section of the mainland Kochi, and the Greater Cochin Development Authority is in charge of its development. Kochi is the most densely inhabited city in Kerala and is part of a larger metropolitan region. Kochi is also a part of Greater Cochin and has the highest number of international and domestic visitors in Kerala. According to a poll done by Outlook Traveller magazine, Kochi is the sixth greatest tourist destination in India.

Munnar

Munnar is a hill station on the Western Ghats, a mountain range in Kerala’s Idukki district. Munnar is thought to signify “three rivers” due to the town’s strategic location at the confluence of the Madhurapuzha and Kundaly rivers. The nearest major railway stations to the location are Ernakulam and Aluva, while Cochin International Airport is 105 kilometers distant. The majority of Munnar’s native flora and fauna survive and thrive in numerous neighboring protected areas, notably the new Kurinjimala Sanctuary to the east. These protected areas are home to various endangered and endemic species, including the Nilgiri Thar, Grizzled Giant Squirrel, and Neelakurinji.

Alleppey

Alleppey serves as the administrative center for the Alappuzha District. This town is believed to be the oldest planned town in the region, and a lighthouse was built on the town’s coast. Alleppey is Kerala’s sixth largest city, located 62 kilometers south of Kochi and 155 miles north of Trivandrum. Lord Curzon referred to this town as “Venice of the East” because of its attractive canals, backwaters, beaches, and lagoons. Alleppey is a popular tourist destination in India, linking Kumarakom and Cochin to the north and Quilon to the south.

Guruvayur

Guruvayur is a picturesque town in Thrissur that is home to the famed Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, India’s fourth largest temple in terms of the number of worshippers who visit the site. According to mythology, Guruvayur may be as old as the temple idol. There are no historical documents to confirm, although a place called Kuruvayur is mentioned in the Tamil novel ‘Kokasandesam’. Many references to Kuruvayur can be found as early as the 16th century. Kuruvai means sea in ancient Dravidic, hence the village on the shore could have been called Kuruvayur.

Thekkady

Thekkady is home to the Periyar National Park, a popular tourist destination for South Indians. It is located in Kerala, near to the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border town of Kumily, about 114 kilometers from Madurai City, 185 kilometers from Cochin International Airport, and 114 kilometers from Kottayam railway station. The sanctuary is well-known for its deep evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous woods, and savanna grasslands, which are home to elephant herds, sambar, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed Macaques, and Nilgiri Langurs. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, which covers an area of 777 square kilometers, was designated as a Tiger Reserve in 1978.
